Who Was Gary Rhodes?

A Legacy of Heart, Hustle, and Hope

Born on July 7, 1966, in Waco, Texas, Gary Rhodes was more than a name — he was a force of kindness, character, and community service. A proud graduate of Waco High School (Class of 1984), Gary’s early years were shaped by deep faith, family values, and an unwavering love for his neighborhood. He continued his education at Navarro and Temple Junior Colleges, laying a strong foundation for a life spent serving others.
Gary’s greatest gift was his heart for youth and his belief in their potential. Whether through coaching softball or football, mentoring at the Boys & Girls Club, and the Methodist Children’s Home where he was a Supervisor for ten years, or organizing sports through the City of Waco, Gary consistently poured his time, energy, and joy into the lives of young people. His love of basketball wasn't just a pastime — it was a platform for mentoring, guiding, and uplifting others.
He lived fully and fearlessly, finding joy in playing dominoes, shooting pool, and gathering with classmates, friends, and family. Spiritually grounded through Greater Bible Way Church, Gary walked in faith and radiated love, peace, and encouragement to everyone he encountered.
Even in his professional life — Gary’s purpose remained unchanged: to give, guide, and grow with his community. He lived with humility and laughed with ease, leaving behind a legacy that can’t be measured in trophies or titles but in lives changed.
Gary united in marriage with his beloved wife, Stephanie R. Rhodes, in 2000 — a bond built on deep devotion and shared purpose. Though preceded in death by his parents and son, Brandon Darnell Price, and several family members, Gary's spirit continues to live on through his family, classmates, and the many young lives he touched.
Today, the Legacy of Gary Rhodes Scholarship Foundation stands as a living tribute — carrying forward his passion for sports, youth development, and educational opportunity.
Gary Rhodes didn’t just live in Waco — he lifted it. And through this scholarship, his light will continue to shine in the hearts of the next generation of leaders, athletes and changemakers who he empowered.
